MMB – Holiday Health Tips

Good morning everyone,

How are you all doing?  We are almost half way through December, can you believe it? I hope and pray that you are taking time to “pause” and reflect on the meaning of the season and not be carried away into the sea of retail never land and Grinch grumpiness!  If you are tail spinning in that direction, go get your running shoes on quickly and head out the door for a good run! There’s nothing like a good run to sweat some stress out, agree?

Excellent job to everyone who was able to make it out to classes this past week, especially the weekend crew!  A big round of applauds for those who made it out to regular Boot Camp AND Running Boot Camp!    You guys were rockin’ it and putting 110% effort in!  Believe me, the fruit is coming and many of you are starting to taste what being conditioned feels like!  I’m watching pounds melt away on some of you and it’s so awesome to watch!  I know that some of you have had to go clothes shopping to buy the next size down, woo hoo!  Keep it going guys. Do something crazy this month and lose weight in the month of December.  You can do it!

Thought for the week:  Tips on staying healthy over the holidays

  1. 1) Sleep is king!   Many people ask me how I’m able to juggle so many things in my life.  I’ll tell you right now, there is now way I could manage all I do if I stayed up late every night.  O.k. truth be told, I might be a little boring come night time, but I am in bed by 10pm and I always wake up rested and ready to go.  For those of you who are under a lot of stress right now or are pushing it hard in your work outs, you NEED the rest.  This is the time when your cells are repairing and your body and mind and calm.  I can always tell in personal training when someone has had a good or a bad night of sleep because it shows in their work out.  Do yourself a favor and get to bed early!

  2. 2) Are you drinking enough water?  Hydration, hydration, hydration!  Many of us are prone to drinking more coffee, tea, and alcohol this time of year due to the colder weather and holiday parties you might attend.  Don’t forget to drink water throughout the day.  Remember, check out the color of your urine and odor factor!  Look for pale yellow and odorless.

  3. 3) Eat foods that are both prebiotic and probiotic to strengthen your immune system.  This time of year is when we spend more time indoors. Make sure you are eating enough fruits and vegetables, both raw and cooked to feed the good bacteria in your gut.  Additionally, make sure you are either taking probiotic supplements or are drinking things like Kombucha and Kefir daily.  Watch the sugary drinks and treat foods!  Sugar feeds bad bacteria and can counteract the good stuff you are putting in.  This is why treats need to be eaten every once in a while, so choose wisely when you eat your treats!

  4. 4)Stay motivated with your work outs!  As I mentioned in the intro, stress is all around us right now and exercise will help you combat it and strengthen your immune system and metabolism.  We are more vulnerable to getting sick when we are run down.  Get your work outs in and make sure to have rest days too!

  5. 5)  An article from Dr. Axe on preventing the common cold or flu:   I truly appreciate Dr. Axe and the type of articles that he has available to us on his site.  Check out these tips from Dr. Axe and let’s stay healthy together this winter!
