I hope you all had an awesome weekend and are relieved that summer has begun! Excellent work to everyone who made it out to classes this past week! I know stress has been running high leading up to the end of the school year, so I hope you can all take a deep breath and relax the pressure a bit.
For the May Goal’s Challenge the winner is Joanne Vieira! She challenged herself to climb the Bum Burner hill in under an hour and has also been working out and moving consistently seven days a week for several weeks. You rock Joanne and inspire all of us to keep moving!
I know many of you set goals for yourself in the month of May and tried new things! A few shout outs to: Jeannette Ford for trying paddle boarding in Hawaii! Christy Stevens committed to doing intermittent fasting and a cleanse every Monday! Bernadette Calvo committed to climbing Mission Peak! Way to go everyone! Let’s keep coming up with new ways to move and challenging ourselves to get out of our comfort zones to take life on!

Thought for the week: A Reflection on 10 Years of Business
When I reflect upon the last ten years of running my fitness business, my mind is flooded with a plethora of memories. Whenever I drive past Orloff park in Pleasanton, I am always reminded of my very first boot camps that I started where I flexed my new found trainer muscles and fell in love with coaching and training! A huge shout out to Joanne Vieira and Debbie VanBuskirk, who were with me in the beginning, and are still going strong today!
As with any fitness business, there are many people who have come and gone throughout the years, and it’s always a joy for me to reconnect with friends and get to know new ones. I have always appreciated the community of people who have gathered together to do life and fitness together. Some people come for a few weeks to try something new in addition to their gym. Other people are looking for an alternative to their gym environment that is more customized and personalized. Some people are training for an event and need an extra push and some people stick around for a few years. And some people, like Doreen Wagner, started with me and then in later years, took off on their own incredible fitness journey! If you don’t know Doreen, she is an amazing athlete and trainer in the valley and I am SO proud of her! What an honor and privilege to be used by the Lord in this way!

It’s an interesting mental exercise to think about the type of people who usually stick with me. For some reason, my classes, approach and style seem to attract many teachers or people who are involved in school administration! I find this very interesting, but we all seem to have a heart for kids and for educating. Since I am also a homes school parent, this has brought true comradery and a like mindedness.
I’ve also noticed that people who stick with me are usually passionate, authentic, and hard working people. I love this! If you are taking time to read this blog, then you know you are that type of person! I think this is why we have had success together. The type of training that I offer is hard and admittedly, it’s not for everyone. I mean, come on….can you see me teaching yoga!? I’m an intense and passionate girl, who is not afraid of working hard. I always try my best to live authentically and to share as much knowledge with you about fitness and nutrition.
Admittedly, sometimes I can rock the boat. As with any passionate person, I can sometimes become a little overzealous and can turn some people “off” with my rantings and ravings about living a healthy and fit lifestyle. I know this about myself and work hard to try and inspire and motivate as many of you as possible. Sometimes I’m successful and sometimes I need to reign in my tongue! Honestly though, I don’t know how to be any different. Mathew 12-24 says “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” Well, that’s me I guess! LOL!
When I think back to my earlier days of training, I had many things to learn. There is definitely an art to training people and knowing how hard to push and when to back off. Let’s just say that in the beginning I liked to put the pedal to the metal and push harder! Yes, I blew out a few people, but I learned very quickly that I needed to listen more and speak less in hearing out people’s goals and also learning how to observe the body.
Thankfully, I have a very intuitive nature and tap into this whenever I am working with someone one-on-one or in a group setting. I thank the Lord for this gift as it has served me very well, and therefore has allowed me to serve you well! It’s hard to explain, but I have the ability to read people very quickly, especially in a training environment, and can adjust things on a dime to make the experience just right.
I’ve also learned to have a more sensitive heart and to adjust my expectations for someone. I may have the full intentions of training someone hard before they walk in the door, only to quickly adjust because when the person walks through the door, I can see that they haven’t slept, are filled with stress and tightness, and what they really need is a foam roller and a box of tissues! What they need is a trainer with two ears to listen and a heart for understanding their circumstances. I am thankful that the Lord has softened my heart in this way.
I honestly can’t imagine doing anything else with my life than being a trainer. I love fitness! I love sweating together and having that awesome feeling of completing a hard work out together! I love a good adrenaline rush and gritting our teeth together to get one more rep in! I love seeing you guys commit to your health and dedicate time to consistent work outs, only to find yourself stronger and more confident in a few weeks time! I love seeing a spiral up of positive momentum in a person’s life! I love hearing texts and e-mails of new things you are trying and accomplishing because you feel stronger and healthier as a result of the training we do together!
I don’t know what the future holds for any of us. But I know this. We are all better off moving as often as possible so that we can live our best life possible. Is it hard? Yes. Are we worth it? Hell yes! Do we have more work to do? Yes!
Let’s continue to take life on together and inspire one another to bring our best so that we can live the life we are suppose to live. I’m so happy that our paths have crossed, whether it’s been a few weeks or a few years, know that I am thankful for each and every one of you because you have blessed my life.
Thank you for letting me be a part of your journey of health and wellness for these past ten years. Let’s make the next ten even better!
Love to you all!
