Blog 12/6/20 What Do Lockdowns Mean for Fitness?
I hope you are enjoying this beautiful weekend of sunny skies and mild temperatures. It’s kinda weird though without any wind. After all, we do live in the Bay Area which is known for wind! Have you noticed the air quality? We are back in the moderate category at 60 AQI. So, yes we are thankful for beautiful weather, but man, we could SURE use some rain about now! I heard a Fire Chief commenting on the radio the other day about how California now has a fire season that is year round. Maybe you’ve heard the same? Come on rain clouds!
I’m writing this blog on Sunday and as of 10pm tonight, Alameda County is back in a shelter in place mode. At least we have an idea of what daily life looks like during a SIP since we’ve gone through this a few months back.
Thankfully, outdoor fitness is still allowed – yay! According to the guidelines, social distancing of 6 feet and masks are required. For any of my outside curbside classes, I will kindly ask for you to please wear your mask when you arrive, pick up gear, or pass one another. Once you are situated at your station, masks are optional. I measured the spaces in between the stations out front and there is a little more than 8 1/2 feet between each person. For my Park Fitness classes, because we are on the go at a public park with other people, I feel that we should wear masks.
Please understand I am not excited about wearing masks while we are doing cardiovascular exercises, but with these new restrictions, this is the only way we can continue exercising outside in a small group fitness class. Thank you so much for understanding these changes that I’m making through this SIP. If you have any questions or comments, please reach out to me!
Announcements and Reminders:
- Monday Park Fitness Field Trip: For Park Fitness on Mondays at 10:15am, this will be a flexible class in regard to location and will take on more of a “field trip” style. I have wanted to add hill drills into this class format and the only way to do that is to change locations. If you are interested in adding in some hill work into your fitness routine and a 10:15am class time works for you, please reach out to me tonight via text to communicate details for tomorrow’s class in Dublin.
- Special Christmas Park Fitness class Saturday, December 19th at 9:30am! Directly following Park Fitness on Saturday, 12/19, I will provide a simple Mama Jen’s breakfast. This will be outside in front of my home studio with social distancing. If you plan on attending Boot Camp On-Line, you are welcome to come join us at 9:30am. If you need to grab and go I totally understand that too and would be happy to send you off with a yummy and nutritious breakfast! As many of you know, I typically do a Boot Camp and Brunch at the church that is sit down, but obviously, this is not possible this year but that doesn’t mean that we can’t enjoy a little holiday cheer together outside!
- Angel Tree Needs – My church, Valley Bible in Pleasanton, is looking for ways to bless those who are in financial need this year. I will be taking a collection of gift cards to give to Valley Bible Church over the next two weekends. If you are out shopping and would like to pick up an extra gift card to stores such as Safeway, Target, Walmart, etc, please connect me this week or next and I’ll take the gift cards to Valley Bible so they can give them to families in need. Thank you in advance for your kindness and help!
- Merchandise Update! How are you guys liking the tanks, t-shirts, and hoodies? Pretty cool huh? Thank you so much for being willing to wear Jen Allan Fitness merch out there! I appreciate your support immensely! O.k. so here’s the deal. I know a few of you are interested in the scoop neck sweat-shirt that I was wearing last week. I checked in with Uberprints and the minimum for screen printing is 12 items, so the scoop neck sweatshirt would be $58 ea! Yikes! That’s too expensive. So, in order to get the price down on this product, I need to have another big order of product, like around 25 items! So, if you like the t-shirts and tanks and think you would enjoy other colors, please let me know! If I could put together another order with around 25 items, the cost would come way down for the merch. I will create some sample products so you can see what they would look like. I’m aiming for the costs to be about the same: $22 for t-shirts, $24 for tanks, $35-40 for sweatshirts and hoodies.

Thought for the week: Focus On – Why You Are Here
Sigh….life is hard right now. Not gonna lie. Now more than ever, we need to dig deep and surround ourselves with reminders of what our purposes are. Are you a wife or husband? Are you a parent? What role do you have in your job? Are you an educator? What are the things you need to do every day to pour into those roles? With an overwhelming amount of negative news and information all around us, I greatly encourage you to get super purpose driven. How can you bless those in your sphere of influence? Think of something you can do special for your spouse or your kids. If you find that you are getting blue, focus on those you know who are hurting and reach out to them. The act of making someone else feel better will uplift your spirits!
While we are more limited now with social activities because of the SIP, think of Christmas traditions you can still carry on within your household and nuclear family. Are there certain recipes that you always make during Christmas time or a special batch of cookies? Do you have special movies you enjoy watching? What about a car ride to go and see Christmas lights? Let’s continue having an attitude of gratitude and counting our blessings daily. And since it’s Christmas, this is the perfect time to focus on what Christmas is all about.
I’m sure you’ve seen “A Charlie Brown Christmas” Do you remember Linus explaining to Charlie Brown what Christmas is all about? Linus read Luke 2: 8-20 If you’d like to watch the clip, it’s below:
Let’s get real. Let’s be authentic. And let’s focus on the things we do every day that define who we are and carry us forward. Keep checking in with one another and focusing on these things, found from Galatians 5:22-23:
I appreciate you all so much! Have a blessed week and I’ll see you soon!
