Blog 1/31/21 Has the Pandemic Helped or Hurt Your Fitness?

Hi Everyone!

I hope you are enjoying your weekend and this beautiful weather!  It’s a nice change after all of the rain we had last week, but most of all, I was thankful to get out and run with you guys at Park Fitness yesterday! 

This past weekend was the 4th Winter Fitness Challenge!  For those of you who are participating, how are you feeling?  Stronger?  Better endurance?  More sore?  How is the Nutrition Challenge coming along?  I’d love to hear updates on how you are doing?  Are the sweet cravings decreasing?  Are you intermittent fasting?  How is that going?  I would love an update!  Let’s share our journeys and success stories with one another. 

Announcements and Reminders:

  1.  Winter Fitness Challenge ends Saturday, February 13th!  You have two more weeks to dial your fitness and nutrition in!  Let’s find out who has been working the hardest out there!  If you are doing the Nutrition Challenge, I’ll need to see your logs so that I can determine who has been the most committed with results in order to win a prize.  For the Fitness Challenge, I’ll be reviewing your results from week 1 and comparing them to week 6, so let’s keep the commitment and focus going!


  1. Barre Blend On-Line Trial:  I will offer Barre Blend On-Line again on Wednesday at 12noon and Friday at 6:45am.  If you like this schedule, please support this class and come on out for some Yoga, Barre, core, balance, and stretching!


  1. Middle School PE February Block is starting this Tuesday 3pm!  This class is designed for 6th through 8th graders.  The time has changed to 3pm.  Classes are 45 minutes long.  $95 for the month.  Contact me for more info.


  1. Teenage Boy Trail Cookie Recipe.  Do you have teenage boys in the house?  Are they constantly starving?  Ty making these trail cookies and leave them in a container on the counter.  When your teenager is hungry, tell them to eat a trail cookie!  Girls will like them too of course, but I don’t have girls, I have boys and they are like garbage disposals.  LOL!    The recipe is below:

I titled this cookie Teenage Boy Trail Cookie because teenage boys inhale food non-stop.  They need big time fuel and I came up with this recipe so your teen son might be satisfied for at least an hour before getting hungry again!  LOL!  Of course, feel free to mix up the recipe depending on the ingredients you have on hand.  Be creative.  As a matter of fact, have your son be creative and roll up his sleeves in the kitchen too.  Of course, these cookies can be for girls too.  I am just biased because I have two teenage boys at home and they are literally non-stop hungry and looking for food to eat.  These cookies satisfy them for at least a little while.


1/2 cup Nut Butter of your choice – almond, cashew, peanut, etc.

1 egg

1 cup of unsweetened organic apple sauce

1 cup of organic oats Note: if you don’t want to use oats, you can use ground almond flour

1/4 cup of unsalted raw sunflower seeds ( you can also used chopped peanuts, walnuts, cashews etc)

1/4 pumpkin seeds

2 T Chia seeds

2 T Hemp seeds

1/4 ground flax seeds

1/2 organic raisins Note:  you can substitute raw cacao nibs too

1/4 cup of raw cacao powder

1/4 organic raw honey

2 tsp cinnamon

2 tsp baking soda

Preheat oven to 325 degrees.  Mix wet ingredients first in a bowl with a fork.  Add dry ingredients and mix until just incorporated.  Batter will be thick and chunky.  If it’s too dry, add a little water or nut milk. 

Place onto baking sheet in about 2 inch circles and bake for 15-18 minutes. 

Let cool.  Enjoy! 

Note:  This is a dense snack full of the right amount of carbs, proteins and fats.  This could also be a quick breakfast with 1/2 a banana or fruit.  Always use organic ingredients when you can.  Feel free to play around with the ingredients.

Thought for the week:  Has the Pandemic Helped or Hurt Your Fitness?

I can’t believe we are coming up on one year since the first shelter-in-place from the pandemic.  It’s mind boggling how much the entire world has changed.  Think of how our every day lives and schedules have been radically transformed.  I would say in some ways better, but in many ways worse too?  I’m sure we could all sit down together and get a big white board and write a pros and cons list of all of the positives and negatives from everything we’ve all gone through this past year.  I’m sure it would be fascinating to realize that we are all experiencing many of the same emotions.  I think in this way, the pandemic has connected us more deeply because it has impacted us similarly. 

So, how has the pandemic affected your health?  Look back on the way you lived a year ago.  Thinking of where you are today, are you in a better place or worse in your health?  I think it would be a very fascinating study to conduct.  I think you could look at both sides of the spectrum and say that, “Yes, the pandemic has been better for some and worse for others.”  Some of you have transformed your living areas or garages into mini-gyms.  You are making more home made meals and you are eating out less.  Although, there are also people who have handled the difficulties of the pandemic through stress eating with more sugar and late night binges. 

Maybe some of you have had your businesses shut down because of the pandemic and financial struggles are real.  Maybe you’ve had a relative who has suffered from Covid and barely made it through.  Maybe you know people whose relationships have fallen a part because of the pressures of the pandemic?  Do you have a child in school who has greatly struggled with on-line learning and has been depressed?  These are all very real things and none of us are bullet proof.

I think most of us know that the pandemic is going to last several months longer.  None of us have a crystal ball, but masks are here to stay for the foreseeable future and so is on-line learning and Zoom conferences.  It’s true we can’t control any of these things, but I encourage you to take stock in the things you can control.  They haven’t changed by the way.  What we think, say, how we behave, what we eat, when we move, and how we treat one another are all the same things we CAN control. 

It is more challenging to stay positive these days, but it IS possible. You have to work harder at it, but we can still be joy filled, grateful, and productive.    What are you reading these days?  What are you watching?  Who are your communicating and hanging out with?  Again, same rules as before right?  Negative in is negative out.  Garbage in is garbage out.  Now more than ever, we need to be the light in the world, especially for those of us who believe in God.  God calls us to love our neighbor as ourselves.   Mark 12:31 says….. ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”  So, who is your neighbor? 

There’s no doubt about it.  Life is harder now than it was before.  And, that looks differently for all of us, but we can still rise up and create a better world by how we conduct ourselves, serve, and love.  If we don’t do this, then who will?  Who will set an example for our kids if we don’t show them what real love looks like?  In times of trouble and hardship, do we crumble and fall, or do we pray and focus on eternal things? 

Lately, I have been really connecting with this verse from the bible from Mathew 6:19-21.  “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”  Woah, so amazing!  My friends, where is your treasure right now?  Hold onto the things of this world loosely or they will consume you.  You will have much less burden on your shoulders if you live like this, especially now.

So, let’s do that.  Let’s live our lives not focusing on earthly things, but using our gifts and abilities to pour into other people to show what true love looks like.  And when I say love, I mean unconditional love.  The kind that doesn’t judge or condemn, but is there with open arms.  This is how we are called to live and now, more than ever.  Let’s make a difference in the lives of the people we touch daily.  We are not promised a tomorrow, so let’s make today count.
